I saw two Macs on my local craigslist yesterday and picked them up today for $50.

They both did not have hard drives but I put two spare 2.5" 80GB ones in them. That’s all the extra drives I have. The one pictured I cleaned a lot inside and out. Apparently it is a dual 2.5GHz PowerPC with 6GB RAM + a 128mb AGP ATI RADEON card. This one I plan to sell.

The other one is a lot more interesting. It’s a dual processor Xeon and I am upgrading it to dual quad core Xeons and bumping the RAM to 16GB. Also tossing in an SSD. The only thing though is that I would need a gfx card upgrade (these are finicky...) Anyone happen to have a 512mb NVIDIA 8800GTS or a Radeon HD 5770? And does anyone happen to have any spare 3.5" SATA 7200RPM hard drives that are at least 300GB? Let me know. Thanks

The PowerMac is useless to me, but I can probably get some money for it. I got it up and running. The Mac Pro can be upgraded and and updated, so the plan is to get everything running and it can be a cheap lil’ video editing workstaiton for me.

Last December I took two big older MacPros to Goodwill and they both were totally operational. Nobody in my company wanted them so off they went.

I just sold a PowerPC G5 and 23" Cinema Display to macofalltrades.com. After paying for the shipping boxes, I'm getting $65. I lost $60 in having to buy their packing/boxes, but it was worth it. They send the boxes to you, with foam inserts that fit what you are sending them. Pretty handy.

My wife’s tolerance for my bringing home large towers reached it’s end with the box I turned in to a home server. She doesn’t know about the Optiplex 990 that will soon be coming home with me, but at least it’s smaller than those Macs.

Do you need an IDE drive or sata?

Ive got an old Western digital scorpio blue 320gb thats ide. Its a 2.5 inch drive.

I dont have any spare sata drives. Microcenter is selling a 1tb sata western digital blue( or black) for 45.

If you can hold off I may have my old EVGA 670 FTW 2GB. Depends on whether or not my buddy needs it for his office pc.

Im taking my old 780ti out of my htpc and moving it over to the office pc.

If my buddy doesnt need it, 50 and its yours. Its probably 10x better than a 8800gts.

You might want to consider a cheap SSD (like a 60GB for under $30 new) to boot from and a freebie HD for storage. Recent versions of OSX tend to hammer the disk at times and really bog down hard drives. I have a 2007 iMac with 10.10 that I was so slow I was about to throw it out, but with a 480 GB Corsair SSD (and a faster Core 2 Duo found on eBay for $20) it is back to being my primary machine for another year or two. The CPU helps, but the SSD was a huge boost with the newer OS. Nice find BTW. I've been thinking of picking one up just because they look cool but have nowhere to put it unless I retire my trusty blue and white G3.

Dude, I have had three of those, now one as I sold the others. Hackintosh it with a 2GB graphics card (I have a gigabyte one in mine) and go to work. I used 64on32 but i hear you cant do that anymore for mavericks. SSD all the way, biggest one you can get.

Upgrading those older Mac Pro to Dual Xeons can be tricky business, but do so, the dual CPU thing is completely worth it.

I wont even disclose the absolute steal I scored early today, but in a few days, I should have an absolute monster upgrade happening to my already faster than it should be desktop.

I’ve got an Intel 530 series 240gb SSD, I don’t plan on changing that out any time soon. My desktop has 2 upgrades that are coming due, and 1 upgrade that I just really wanted. I scored the one I really wanted for cheaper than either of the other two.

I intend on upgrading RAM and GPU later this year though. I’m thinking of going for the GTX 1070 when the price drops a little bit, and looking around for a 64gb RAM upgrade. Will cost several very pretty pennies to do the RAM though. 32 is a lot, but I’ve maxed it out several times and nearly had a crash over it, so I’m looking to not deal with that again. Machine is about 4 years old, and I’m looking to get another 4 out with this upgrades, and I’m looking to keep it under $1200 for the upgrades. So far, I should be able to stay within budget, and that’s a very good thing.

Sweet. I just built a 6700K rig with 32GB RAM and got a Samsung 950 Pro M.2 SSD. I’m waiting for the RX480 and then I will use it to make VR stuff in Unity 3D

I thought about going that route. Ive never had and AMD card though.

Been intel and nvidia with all my builds. My HTPC will be VR capable once it gets my 970. Been waiting on the VR hype to die down to go with one.

I build a new pc just about every big generation change. 2500k, 4790k, 5930k, 6700k. I either sell or use the old pc hardware somewhere. That or my buddy sells it as used hardware through his pc repair sshop.

Usually get about 60 or 70% of the price back out of it. Then build a new one.

Asus Rog Maximus Viii Hero Alpha mobo, gskill trident z 4x16gb 3200mhz ram(2 separate 32gb kits), h100i gtx(looks like the v2), samsung 950 pro 512gb m2, samsung 850 evo 1tb ssd, Seagate 4tb 5900rpm drive( won thru a contest) WD purple( surveillance) 2 tb drive for home security. There’s another WD drive i forget its size, i use it for a NAS for the htpc.

Its currently using my 970 card. IVe got the cablemod widebeam rgb kit. 2 of them, magnetic 60cm for lighting. In a custom painted on the inside, hydro dipped outside Cooler Master Master case pro 5. Almost forget my corsair ax1200i psu.

The inside is painted a dark gray that matches the mobo, the outside was hydro dipped a red and gray carbon fiber. With my slsleeved gray, red and black psu cables.

This was the first time ive actually gone this far with a pc. Usually its just whatever color the case is and that was it. My buddys pc shop is next to a guy that hydro dips, he did it for cheap. The outside aint perfect but the only screw up is on the bottom anyway.

I have a 6700K as well, Gigabyte Z170HD3P board, 32GB DDR4 2400 RAM, 256GB Samsung 950 Pro M.2, 1TB 7200RPM HD (I still have like 600GB free on it) DVD burner. Case is a Thermaltake G42 and a 700W Rosewill PSU... I was going to buy an R9 390 but I am waiting for the RX480 and will go with that most likely.

If i didnt go with a custom glass tube loop in my x99 machine, id have it instead of a 6700k. I need a somewhat portable machine and thats what the 6700k machine was for.

Then i couldnt run 2 security feeds into my x99. And i didnt want a dvr thing, so 6700k it was.

Once i get the 1080 for my 6700k itll have 3500 bucks in it. Just in parts, not time. My 6700k was originally going to be itx. But i went thru 4 mobos before i got the hero alpha and it said my cpu was dead. Rmad it and intel sent me another. Then it finally roared to life.

All my x99 machine does is sit in a closet running. My buddy remote logs into it for setting up a game server.

My home security is some of the reason for thr 6700k. Plus i wanted to mess with a skylake machine and none of my friends were going to upgrade to it.

My gf uses the htpc more than anything else. She likes watching movies with it with her friends. That’s when im over at a friends drinking, cuz 6 women in one house is enough, then they drink some wine bullshit. I tried it once and it tasted like nasty grape juice.
